Attn: Virgin Media Broadband Users - Use port 443 + SSL

Postby inpheaux » September 18th, 2011, 2:47 pm

Several support requests have come in recently regarding SABnzbd being "slow" for some users . . . who all just happen to be on Virgin Media Broadband in the UK.

These issues have nothing to do with SABnzbd, and everything to do with Virgin throttling traffic on ports 119 and 563, regardless of if you're running SSL or not.

If you're on Virgin please switch your port to 443 and make sure SSL is enabled. If your provider doesn't offer SSL on port 443, demand it or switch providers.

Also Giganews / Supernews. Really any major host should do this. If they don't you should complain.

the superhub has nothing to do with what the OP is talking about. You change the setting on Sab not on the router!

Great tread I thought it was only me that had seen a drop in speed, although I'm not using either of the two port stated on the initial post (using 8080) I have a drop in speed.

Also I do not have access port 443 from my usenet provider (astraweb), but I do have access to 23 and 1818. Any suggestions on other ports?

Help much appreciated ;)

Your obviously using the wrong url with Astraweb then

Secure Server: ssl.astraweb.com Ports 443 or 563

ssl-eu.astraweb.com Ports 443 or 563 (European)

ssl-us.astraweb.com Ports 443 or 563 (US)

Virgin media user here. Was consistently getting 5.0 mb/s using this config. Today it has dropped to ~400 kb/s! Anybody else having similar problems?

Guys/Girls

Hopefully someone will be able to help me out on this problem I seem to have regarding this speed issue.

My Isp is Virgin Media, I have the Biggest package(100Meg) therefore I have no throttling or capping !!

I've just changed to Sabnzbd from ALt Binz, but for some reason I cant get my speed up ----normally about 2.0MB/s at best.....even down to 12KB/s. I have set my port to 443 and enabled SSL.

These are my details :

Port 443
Connections 10
SSL Enabled
Retention 1700 days
Article Cache Limit 200M

I have run a speed test and I am getting download speeds around the 100MB mark, so I feel it has nothing to do with my provider.

I really want to continue to use Sab as I like the interface and what you can do with it (XBMC, etc)-- but feel I have no option but to revert back to Alt binz if I cant find a solution-- taking me nearly 40 mins to download a small file.

Any help appreciated

Thanks

Scott

You don't say who your newsprovider is. 10 connections to who? You've enabled SSL and are using port 443, but are you using the SSL server for your newsprovider?

Thanks for the info. I recently upgraded to 30Meg broadband with Virgin Media. Download speeds were great for the first few weeks then dropped to between 250K - 400K. I've just changed to 443 and enabled SSL and now getting 2.6M.
