Execute Command to verify Proxy is working

Post by TheDude »

With the coming ISP internet cops more users will be turning to proxies and encryption. It would be nice if we could execute a command to verify the system web proxy is working on the NAS.

Something like

Click button with command "curl http://whatismyip.org; echo"
Display Result = 185.497.258.362

Here is the article about the ISP's cooperating with the RIAA lobby.
"ISPs are ready to begin their efforts to curtail illegal movie, music and software downloads on July 12th"

http://www.bgr.com/2012/03/15/u-s-isps- ... july-12th/

While ssl is fine for the usenet connection, on the web side for the nzb download the hostname is still exposed. Once the connection is made the url and content is encrypted but the hostname will still be visible. So I want to be sure my web proxy is working on the NAS.

We're not going to add a function that has nothing to do with SABnzbd's purpose.

Uh......It has EVERYTHING to do with the purpose. Sabnzbd fetches url's. But hey...... thanks for considering and out right rejection of a useful function . ::)

Even so, we don't really support proxies at all.
It happens to work for http/https retrieval because Python on Windows uses the IE proxy settings,
a side-effect not a concious decision on our side.
Also we don't guarantee it will always work.
Besides, I think you misinterpret what's going to happen.
ISPs are going to send notices to bittorrent users that have been reported by the RIAAA.
ISPs are not going to do wholesale deep packet inspection.
The feature you ask for is at least premature.

I dont use windows and I have no idea (or interest) what IE does. I simply want to know (verify) that sabnzbd is using the system proxy.
Its just that I dont want my habits unnecessarily leaking out to people that have no business poking around about where I go (or my programs) on the web.

as far as "ISPs are not going to do wholesale deep packet inspection" It would seem thats EXACTLY what they are going to be doing.
ISPs are ready to begin their efforts to curtail illegal movie, music and software downloads.....Each ISP has to develop their infrastructure for automating the system.... Measures will also be taken to establish databases “so they can keep track of repeat infringers,
Anyway, can you give it some thought for the future?
Thanks

Although this is not really the place to discuss this, I point to Ars Technica,
which usually has a balanced and well-informed take on things:
http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news ... uly-12.ars
The system involves major labels monitoring BitTorrent and other peer-to-peer networks for copyright infringement, and then reporting that infringement to ISPs, who will monitor their networks for the transgressors.
I'd say, stay away from bittorrent.
