it was a password issue; I'm an idiot (had to change my usenet provider subscription to another class of subscription, it had become obsolete, and I forgot to change the passwords in my password manager). All fixed now.

Where do I donate to support future development? 

No unusual characters in my passwords, all are combinations of letters and numerals, a-z and 0-9.  one of my passwords has an upper-case character, in the other two sets of passwords all the letters in the passwords are lower case.  Not sure if this is relevant, but the "My Documents" fold...
