If I deleted what I have and used the installer version would the folder paths and settings be updated automatically come next update?

So after extracting to new folder aim all the pointers at the old directories I was using? (excluding the 3.1.1 portable folder)
After I fix the above, when there is program update, just extract zip contents to current program directory?

Need help updating portable version.
Hello,
I am running version 3.1.1 portable on Win 10 pro. Normally I would just download the zip file, unpack, and dump contents into the 3.1.1 portable folder. But I remember reading something about a program change that made doing so with this old version a problem.
Would appreciate any help.
