Thanks for the advice, I forgot about refresh rate.  After reducing that and trimming the history info, it seems much more responsive.

Hey, I generally use the default user interface for win xp, but recently took a look at the plush design under RC3.  It kills my processor in firefox3, opera9.5 is slightly better using about 80%.  Granted I have pentium 4 2.66GHz with 1.12GB ram.
