So is this for real or spam? anyone else get this?



Hi ex-Newzbin user.

Lamenting the departed site? Dreading doing Usenet the old skool
way? Think the clone NZB sites suck?

Good news: we are Newzbin Two, and we have glad tidings:
NEWZBIN IS BACK! and we are the new management. The crew got most
of the original Newzbin source code and the main databases.
We loved it too much to let it die.

The catch? We wont be up for a very short while cos things need
to be done. For starters we need a cool domain name; also we
need to hack on the code some more to make it run. We are nearly
there but it is very complicated. We reckon we'll up very soon.

So don't drift off to those lame-ass wannabe NZB sites. Hang on
for a little longer and the Big Dog  will be back.

I got the message too. It seems legit IMO. We know for a fact that the Newzbin code HAS been stolen, as has been confirmed by Caesium himself. It stands to reason that someone who would go through the trouble of breaking into the Newzbin servers and stealing their data would do so with the intention of putting it to use. I'm inclined to believe that this notice is legitimate.

What shape this Newzbin 2 will take remains to be seen. I just hope that the servers that host it will be someplace where it will be harder for MPA/MPAA to reach them.

Agreed.  The way I see it someone that wasn't authorized now has my account information.  I'm just hoping payment information is encrypted or hashed.

Said account information consisting of nothing but your e-mail address. Credit card info was never stored on the site, btw.

It'd also contain a password hash.

I know someone who got this e-mail, but I didn't. Even if they do bring it back, I don't know if I'd use it. Seems sketchy.

Newzbin interface and the whole 'reports' system is just not the way to do it anymore ;/

I didn't get the email and I was an editor. Seems suspicious.  But the code did get stolen.

I thought I hadn't got the email. I found it in my spam folder, gmail obviously assumed it was garbage...

checked out the site, it seems to be up

stolen or not, they ARE being straight forward about what their goal is (to make money with this).  That is fine by me.. Newzbin is still the best interface (time will tell what they do with it).  NZBs(dot)org is close, but def not Newzbin.

Now that the site is back I will be watching it cautiously. So far I only downloaded Ubuntu to see if my sabnzbd + nzbdstatus work. They do. It will likely be days before the reports catch up, and I'll take some time to monitor how things are progressing. So far things are looking good.

I have been watching all the Newzbin2 discussions with interest.

But it is as if the whole world got hit with the naive stick.

Newzbin had a whole heap of servers and a complex bespoke setup.

Anyone that thinks that these people got the Site + dbase + user list + domain and are not newzbin themselves are being teminally silly.

Am i going to pay them money, no way.
