What is the best way to copy settings to a new computer?

Post by yazyazoo »

I just got a new computer and would like to know what is the best way to copy the settings from the old computer to the new one.  Is there a file I can just transfer over that will keep all my server, passwords, folders, rss feed  information?

I know I can manually go page by page but that is so tedious.

TIA

The best way to do is :

go into c:\documents and settings\user* (whatever the user's username is)
inside there contains everything that user profile is made up of.
you need to make sure you have all files show. (even the hidden ones).
the easiest way to do this is have the user log onto the new machine you want it set up on. Then log that user out.
log on the machine as administrator

go back into c:\documents and settings. look for that users profile. go into the folder, and dump everything there.
you should have an empty folder.

Now go to that old machine. Copy the entire profile. Copy that into the empty profile folder on the new machine.

have that user log onto, if everything was copied correctly, everything should work.

Just copying the whole profile might not be a good idea.
A lot of the files contain system specific settings which aren't always portable.
For SABnzbd, eveything is in c:\documents and settings\user\local data\application data\sabnzbd

What is the difference between copy all the files in  c:\documents and settings\user\local data\application data\sabnzbd vs copy sabnzbd.ini? For Win 7 (and Vista?), there is no  c:\documents and settings\ .

The history is copied too when you copy the whole profile.
Normally you should only copy the INI file.
Different OS's use different locations, see: http://wiki.sabnzbd.org/configure-v2

I like to copy the backup folder too to avoid re downloading the same nzb after you restart the new installation.

The backup folder contain backup copies of all your nzb you downloaded in the past...
