Free IPv6 Newsserver

Post by rascalli »

As SABnzbd 0.3.0 supports IPv6 (thank you, ShyPike and others!), you can use the free IPv6-only binary newsserver newszilla6.xs4all.nl. That is: if you have IPv6 connectivity.

To check if you have IPv6 connectivity, use "ping6 newszilla6.xs4all.nl". If you get ping6's back (see below), you have IPv6 connectivity. Using newszilla6.xs4all.nl is then just a matter of filling out newszilla6.xs4all.nl in SABnzbd's GUI (Config -> Servers, or http://localhost:8080/sabnzbd/config/server/ ), and off you go!

Retention of newszilla6 is about 12 - 14 days. Connection is free for all, but non-xs4all-customers are limited to 500 kbps = 50 kBps, or 175 MB per hour. A 700MB DivX will thus take 4 hours, a 4.2GB DVD will take 24 hours.

If you don't get ping6's back, you have no IPv6 connectivity. You can get free IPv6 connectivity via http://www.sixxs.net/, for example. Signing up takes some time, however setting up IPv6 is easy using aiccu and AYIYA. Help via sixxs.

Update to my post about the free IPv6-only binary newsserver newszilla6.xs4all.nl (as reposted here on this forum by rascalli):

I said the connection was limited to 50 kBps (about 500 kbps). This was the max for 1 thread; after I had raised the number of threads from 1 to 3, my download went up from 50 to 133 kB/s. That's close to my linespeed, so it could be 150 kB/s, which is quite nice. I can't measure what happens when I raise the number of threads even higher, because of my linespeed.

Thanks! Will try these out.  Just a couple questions...Port numbers???  I would assume 119. Also does the newszilla server require you to put anything for the username/password

Maybe you should move this to a support topic and as it says in the sticky give information about version/os etc.

Nothin really new but:

For the dutch (http://www.xsnews.nl/Abonnementen/Aanme ... Type=Proef) its a trial version for a subscription (lasts 5 days).
After that you have to cancel it or you will have to pay for it. Anyway their payed services are imho pretty good.

More free (IPv6-only) binary newsservers:

news.ipv6.eweka.nl
Retention 120 days. Unlimited speed.

reader.ipv6.xsnews.nl
Retention: around 100 days too, speed unknown.

Thanks, just what I need now that my provider has discontinued binary news services 8). The eweka one works very nice, I can't but wonder how long my v6 tunnel provider will last before they will block access or at least cap the speed to this host (currently around 45 mbit/s ;D). The xsnews one connects but no more than that for now.
