WD TV Live not playing files......

Post by Justint1976 »

Hey there guys and gals. I am pretty new with this whole thing, so I apologize for my naivety up front. I have never had any issues playing any types of files on my WD TV Live, but for some reason I cannot play 99% of the content I have downloaded using SB and Sab.

I get this error "Unable to play selected file, Refer to user manual for list of files"

I have searched all over and haven't found much. I have found some information regarding "Headers" (Not sure what they are really) and have found a solution using MKVMerge to remux the files manually.

Due to the lack of information on this issue I feel like it may be something I have done within Sab, hopefully an easy fix.

Any insight/help would be greatly appreciated :)

SABnzbd doesn't do a thing with mkv files after unpacking.
You have to realize that mkv is nothing more than a container format
that may contain all sorts of encoding methods, not all of which are supported
by your mediaplayer.
In fact XMBC and VLC are the only two programs will just about play anything thrown at them.

Thanks for the input. I have both VLC and XBMC, they are both great. What I don't get is that I have never had this issue downloading via torrents. And I'm having it with basically every file I have gotten via Sab. Looking for someone who has the same components input to compare possibly.

It would help if you would tell the extensions and file sizes SAB has downloaed and you're trying to play.

(And don't make it more complex by post-processing files)

SABnzbd is not a factor in this issue.
As long as the downloads verify correctly and unpack without errors there can be
only two factors: the poster and your mediaplayer.

I just downloaded roughly 20 different files. Different shows, none of them will play on either WD TV live boxes, but all of my downloaded content acquired through torrents still plays A-OK. Also, I unrar'd a file manually (One which gives me the error when ran through the automatic process) and it plays just fine. It has to be something in the unpacking/post processing of the file. IMO. Here is the information on the file in Sab: Is there a way I can have someone look at my settings and confirm? Screenshots?

SABnzbd does nothing with media files, except have them unpacked from RAR files by unrar.
Do the files play OK with XBMC or VLC?
If you don't believe me, just use another Usenet client.

Grimm was a download that wouldn't play using the automatic unpacking via Sabnzbd. I re downloaded the file again using Sabnzbd from scratch, but this time turned off the automatic processing. I used winrar and extracted it myself, and it played perfectly. It has to be something in the post processing.

Did you byte-compare the two files?

Code: Select all

fc /b first-file second-file
(Another cause could be simply access rights.)

You mean the size of the files? They are the same size.

"fc" is commandline program that does a byte-by-byte comparison of two files.

I think you may be having a problem during extraction, i don't really see how a 1.0gb file can unpack in 4 seconds unless it is on a ssd, if it is on a spinning platter hard drive there just is not time to extract 1.0gb in 4 seconds. On a spinning platter hard drive it should take around 10-12 seconds bearing in mind you are extracting it into memory and then writing it back to the hard drive simultaneously. Compare how long extraction takes with winrar.

You want to test the file that is extracted to see if it is the same as the one in the rar file i.e. that it did not somehow get corrupted during extraction. When you open the rar file in winrar you see a CRC32 value which is a hash of the mkv. If you recalculate the crc32 of the extracted mkv it will match, but if even 1 bit is flipped it will have a different crc32. The simplest way to test this for you is to queue up a download and set the processing to +Unpack that way it downloads and unrars but does not delete the rar files. Open the rars with winrar and click test to make sure they did download properly (almost certain they did but worth verifying). Right-click on the mkv and select Add to archive, change the compression method to Store (as it is the fastest) and press ok, you should end up with one large rar file with the same name as the mkv and almost the same size. When finished double-click on each set of rar files so they both open in two instances of winrar. The CRC32 values should be identical.

If they are not then you potentially have big problems. Since Sabnzbd uses the unrar.exe from rarlabs which also make the winrar which you used to manually extract the file there should, theoretically, be no difference. If they are not the same then i would strongly recommend testing your computers memory (memtest86) and then hard drive (passmark diskcheckup) as the most likely cause of corruption during an extraction would be bad memory, then a failing hard drive (bad sectors), and only then a distant third a software incompatiblity.

If your memory and hard drive pass test then you could try uninstalling and reinstalling sabnzbd. If it continues to occur then it may be a case of just having to manually extract your downloads as it is a glitch peculiar to your system for which the only reasonable chance of resolving would probably require reinstalling windows.

Awesome. I'll run through your instructions. Give it a whirl. One thing I found as well is that if I copy and paste the file from the Completed folder into my desired folder, then it magically works. Strange. I am going to do a fresh reinstall first since I have recently gone through Sab and am fairly well versed with it. If that fails then I will pursue the more time consuming tasks. I am also thinking of upgrading to windows 7 (Vista now). Oh, here is the result of the FC /B test:

The "fc" result means that the files are not identical.
Both files are coming from the exact same NZB?

The fact that moving the files solves the problem means that it's an access rights issue.

exact same nzb. do you know of any workarounds for access rights issues? setting my folders up differently? possibly having temp and completed on one drive while having post processing transfer files to a seperate drive? I just don't know why the files are different in that fc test.....
