Downloading slow with ASUS RT-N66U Router

Hi there!

I have a problem where downloads are slow when I use the ASUS RT-N66U Router as my gateway / DHCP server. By slow, I mean capped at about 2.7 MB/s.

However, when I switch to my crappy ISP-provided router (Arris TG3482ER3) as the gateway, downloads are much faster - 17-18 MB/s.

Environment:
  • sabnzbd versinon: 2.3.9 [03c10dc]
  • Running in a Jail on FreeBSD 11.2-RELEASE-p9, which is part of XigmaNas v11.2.0.4
Other info:
  • To rule out any non-default settings, I did a factory reset on the ASUS, and then the only config change I made was to set the WIFI AP's and assign a static IP to my sabnzbd box.
  • Tested by pausing a download, switching over the router, rebooting the system and resuming the exact same download - I can observe this difference in speed immediately.
  • Using the wrench / "Test Download" feature reveals the same speed characteristics with both routers.
  • The download folder speed shows as 70.9 MB/s and Complete folder speed shows as 77.2 MB/s in both cases.
  • Speed-test shows download speeds of around 18 MB/s, so this matches the "good" speed
I feel like it there must be some setting on the ASUS router that will help. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Sorry for slow response, I was on vacation.

Maybe here I need the help of @sanderjo, but it sounds like this might be a IPv6 tunnel problem.
When you are connected using the new router, what does it show in the Status and Interface settings window for IPv6 address? Does it show any? Is it different when connected to the old router?

Is any QoS settings active?

Thanks for the reply safihre. You might be on to something - with the ASUS router, there is no IPv6 address in the Sabnzbd Status window and ifconfig within the Jail shows the same. With the other router, I'm pretty sure there was an IPv6 address but I will have to switch back to double-check.

Is IPv6 required for faster speeds? If so, I will try to get it working in the Jail. Thanks for the suggestion!

Update: I just restored the ISP-provided router and it also shows no IPv6 in the Sabnzbd status window - so I guess that's not a difference :(

Also, there are no QOS settings that's I can see.

Could you try with various numbers of total connections, for instance 1, 2, 4 and 8, and tell us how it influences the speed? It seems like several people are limited to the same speed of about 2.5 MB/s, and it's interesting that it may be router dependent.

Puzzled that was a great idea! But now I'm puzzled because now it's fast with the ASUS router! I have done nothing except disable one news server so I was left with just newsdemon and dropped it to 1 connection to do this experiment. It was at 2.5 MB.s with 1 connection. Then I went to 2, 4, 8 and it increased to the speed I was expecting. WTF? Then I re-enabled my other server (bulknews), and my thus configuration is back to where it was originally and it's still fast. I have no idea... so very strange...

One observation is that when I had 1 connection, it was doing 2.5 MB.s. So when it wasn't working, maybe it was only able to use 1 connection?

If the problem recurs, I will post back here.

I tried disabling servers and adjusting number of connections with no positive change :(
