Network Speed Help [SAB via Freenas 11.2 Jail ]

Post by natetheskate »

I've seen a lot of similar posts but am hoping for some advice on where my issue might be. Currently running SAB via Freenas 11.2 Jail and have been on different flavors of this platform for years. Running all server grade hardware (Xeon E3 CPU, SuperMicro X10SLL-F MB, 32G ECC memory, SSD cache drive, large SATA raid etc). I have 1.2 gigabit from my ISP running to my personal docsis 3.1 modem which cables directly to my mesh router and a gigabit switch. My server is hardwired to my switch so no additional hops. I know I will never get 100% of my ISP speed but have noticed some strange inconsistencies between running speed tests on my jail CLI compared to the bandwidth report build into SAB. Here is what I'm seeing:

SAB Version 3.2.1
Used cache0 B (0 articles)
System performance (Pystone)151880 FreeBSD-11.2-STABLE-amd64…
Download folder speed271.4 MB/s
Complete folder speed270.9 MB/s
Internet Bandwidth11.5 MB/s (92 Mbps)

And this is what I get from my CLI:
Retrieving speedtest configuration...
Testing from Comcast Cable ...
Retrieving speedtest server list...
Retrieving information for the selected server...
Hosted by CenturyLink
Testing download speed................................................................................
Download: 494.93 Mbit/s

Obviously there is a big difference here. I thought maybe the built in test was single thread but when I test at the CLI single I still get over twice the speed I'm seeing in SAB. I've played with article cache a bunch, tried different usnet providers and I still only seem to get around 50MB/s max. I know in prior builds I was consistently over 100MB/s. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried different numbers of connections? What is the CPU load when you are downloading? Are you downloading to the SSD? Try setting downloader_sleep_time in Config/Special to 0 or 20. If you get 50 MBytes/s then that's about the same as 494.93 Mbit/s. Maybe your ISP is throttling you.

Thanks for the fast response. I have tried different numbers of connections, anything less seems to have a negative effect. I am downloading to an SSD, I tried changing the downloader_sleep_time but both 20 and 0, seem to slow things down a bit in the quick test I did. I just hardwired directly to my mesh router (bypassing my switch) and had a 10G file download at an average of 90MB/s which is the fastest I've had in a long time. Plugged in a different switch I had and got similar results. Ok, maybe its the switch... Plug in old switch, do same test, 90MB/s.... so not the switch. To me it seems likely that Comcast is throttling me. I'm considering adding a PCI-E NIC to my server just to rule out the onboard. Also going to try a couple different newsgroup providers. I have Frugal now and I have heard Highwinds has been throttled a lot by several ISP's (not sure if thats true or not). Thanks again.

Do you mean the 10GB testdownload from within SABnzbd? So: wrench symbol ("Status and interface options"), then click on first tab Status, and there click on "Test download" 10GB?

90 MB/s = 720 Mbps. So, what is your question exactly?

Rarely in the past few months do I see speeds that high. In fact since that test I haven't gotten over 50 MB/s and on average I'm between 25-40 MB/s. It's just odd. With the same newsgroup provider, ISP, and equipment I was consistently capping my connection 5-6 months ago. I think I'm either being throttled or maybe need to try some different providers. My question has been answered, nothing looks out of the ordinary on the SAB side.
