Gigabit connection, unstable download speeds

Post by hughb »

Having gone through all the recommendations of the SAB high connection speed tuning page. I'm unable to get a stable download speed from SAB above 45MBs which I have to set as a speed limit to achieve stability. If I set 100MBs for example. Downloads climb to ~80MBs for maybe 1 minute before progressively dropping slower, including below 45MBs and I'm at a loss about what to try next...

Thank you!

Have you tried upping it to say 75?
In the Status window, what numbers do you get when running the disk speed test?

I've tried but nothing above 45MBs works. The figures are...

Used cache
23.4 MB (35 articles)
System performance (Pystone)
180772 AMD Ryzen 5 2600X Six-Cor…
Download folder speed
299.9 MB/s (x:\TMP\SAB\TEMP)
Complete folder speed
308.2 MB/s (x:\TMP\SAB)
Internet Bandwidth
39.4 MB/s (315.2 Mbps)

Did you see

Internet Bandwidth
39.4 MB/s (315.2 Mbps)

That's not Gigabit.

On my 400 / 400 Mbps, I get "Internet Bandwidth 55.7 MB/s (445.6 Mbps)", so you can trust SAB's measurement to get the rough figures right.

I agree, clearly that figure isn't right somehow. Speedtest dot net however gives me 800 to 900Mbit/s so there's definitely a disconnect there somehow. Also my ISP is well rated and makes regular public claims not to throttle any traffic. Do we know SAB does its sampling?

I don't understand that.

What does https://fast.com/ tell you?

What is the ping time to your newsserver?

Code: Select all

$ ping news.eweka.nl
PING news.eweka.nl (81.171.92.205) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 81.171.92.205 (81.171.92.205): icmp_seq=1 ttl=58 time=2.57 ms
64 bytes from 81.171.92.205 (81.171.92.205): icmp_seq=2 ttl=58 time=2.67 ms
64 bytes from 81.171.92.205 (81.171.92.205): icmp_seq=3 ttl=58 time=2.54 ms
So below 3 ms.

Whatever the problem was, things seem to be working now.

Thanks!
