Is it expected that Sabnzbd downloads slower than Nzbget?

Post by xrqp »

I was downloading with Nzbget at about 4.5MB/s for months. But had stability issues lately, so I tried Sabnzbd and it downloads about 3MBp/s avg (2.3 to 4.3). My DSL internet does speedtest, net at 5.0MBp/s. From reading some other posts, I am guessing this is a somewhat expected result, right?

My system is unraid, running docker containers, with 1 TB solid state cache drive. When I run the Sabnzbd test i get:
  • Used cache 26.0 MB (38 articles)
    System performance (Pystone) 52397 Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7700…
    Download folder speed 390.2 MB/s (/data/usenet/intermediat…)
    Complete folder speed 353 MB/s (/data/usenet/completed)
    Internet Bandwidth 2.3 MB/s (18.4 Mbps)

I think you're mixing bits and Bytes, See https://sabnzbd.org/wiki/faq#toc31

At these speeds, no its not expected at all.
Only when you download at 100+ the speed will be different.
Try playing around with the number of connections, the ports you use, ssl on/off etc.

sander You are correct. My speeds should be in units of MB/s, not Mb/s. I will fix it.

safihre, Thanks. I will try playing with the number of connections. I had already tried 20 and 30 connections per servers x 2 servers (Eweka and US.Newsdemon). I will try lower numbers.

Not very relevant, but this surprises me:
System performance (Pystone) 52397 Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7700…
With an i7 (even from 2017) you should get a higher number. That is: if you're not running on battery, but on power cable. It should be 150.000+ or so for that CPU.

But still ... your system (even with that CPU perf) should achieve your (lowly) linespeed with two fingers in it's nose.

Oh, usual advice:
- wired ethernet (not wifi)
- start with (in your case) 5 connections to your newsserver. Only go up if that improves the speed.

I tried the following. Using Eweka server (I am in California):
  • 5 conns 1.5 MB/s avg.
    7 conns 1.8 MB/s avg.
    10 conns 1.9
    15 conns 2.2
    20 conns 2.5
    25 conns 2.7
    30 conns 2.9
    40 conns 2.9
    50 conns 2.9,
max. allowed conns. is 50.

What a horrible results.

What is the ping time to your eweka newsserver?

So: "ping newsreader.eweka.nl" ?

ping is 218ms

with nzbget I get 4.5MB/s which is the close to the 5MB/s max of my DSL.

ping is OK-ish for California - Netherlands.

I have absolutely no idea what is causing this. With just 3 of 5 connections on that machine of you, you should get your DSL linespeed.

So ... stick to NZBget as that works for you?

To answer your question "Is it expected that Sabnzbd downloads slower than Nzbget?": No, unless on low-spec hardware (NAS, ARM CPU) on very high speed fiber lines (1000 Mbps). Even my modest Celeron box with SAB easily achieves 45 MB/s = 400 Mbps (=my linespeed).

I experienced other problems with Nzbget, so now, overall, they are tied for me. Thanks for the replies and answer.

Good news - I am now getting roughly 4.5 MB/s, basically the same as NZGget. I am not sure what or why it is better now. I did mess around with my unraid docker containers for emby and roon. In emby I deleted my port allocation for port 1900 which was described as the DNLA UDP port. I deleted it so roon would work, but maybe I am lucky that it helps with Sabnzbd.
