Hey guys,

I've got everything all setup on FreeNAS and really happy with how it works. So glad i made the choice of FreeNAS. However i just realise the one con to moving to a NAS and thats when my friends come over, their going to take longer to leech files from my NAS to their USB/External. I would like to know if i am wrong and if theres a quicker way for me to transfer files that is formatted in FAT32/NTFS from a USB drive.

Is plugging the USB to my Windows computer and transfering the files over the network going to be the quickest and only option?

Given that a NAS doesn't have a console, it makes little sense to stick the USB in the NAS.
Using your PC as intermediate seems the sensible solution.

Short summary of steps for FreeNAS:

1. Plug USB device in an available USB port of your NAS.
2. Use Disks|Management in the FreeNAS WebUI to add the USB device to the list of disks.
3. Use Disks|Mount Point  in the FreeNAS WebUI to add the USB device to the list of mounts.

From here you have a variety of methods to transfer files, FTP, SMB or even the File Manager built into the FreeNAS WebUI.

See the FreeNAS Forum for more details.
