Newbie.....Speed Problems

Post by Washwell »

Hi All, im new to this Newsgroup scene was wondering if someone could help

I am on Virgin Media 50MB broadband and using Astraweb Unlimited DSL.....

when downloading a NZB which is so far a 45gb blu-ray the speed is bouncing everywhere from 400KB/S to 3MB/S  :'(

Ive read that 50mb should peek atleast 6.25 and stay there.

I ran a speedtest and im getting 52mps so im confused  :-[

Please help Cheers..

How many threads per server did you set?
Speedtest is not a good measurement.
Virgin Media may well do traffic shaping. UK, isn't it?
Did you set an article cache in Config->General.
Make it at least 150MB when you have enough memory.

On what kind of hardware are you running SABnzbd.?

It will be hard to get any real speed from this hardware with SABnzbd.
The 150M RAM in the laptop must be a mistake, what kind of OS are you running?

Whatever Virgin may have said to you, they most definitely do throttle NNTP traffic at certain times of the day - especially in the evening. On their website they say:
"At peak times we also slow down the speed of file sharing traffic – that's services like Limewire, Gnutella, BitTorrent and Newsgroup (Usenet) traffic. You will, of course, still be able to use these services, but downloads and uploads will take longer during these peak periods."
This applies to all tiers and the throttling is applied using a typically (for Virgin) arcane formula based on percentages of total traffic. The "peak times" mentioned are currently 5p.m. to midnight on weekdays and midday to midnight at weekends.

If you are not already doing so, use port 443 to access Astraweb's ssl server, rather than 119 (see Astraweb's site for server addresses, etc.), as this seems to be less affected (in my area, anyway). Other than that, try using SABnzbd's scheduler to do your heavy downloading in the wee small hours. I always get full speed after midnight.

Using SSL instead of NNTP is definitely a way to avoid traffic shaping. Just don't forget you have to change the port, but also the server's address and check the SSL option.
