Check your connection in Status and Interface settings window.

also, the download icon doesn't show on latest version of MacOS in the menu bar while there is an active download or when idle. you have to click the black space on the menu bar for it to appear.

I cannot reproduce that. I tried in Dark mode and always see the icon. Did you reboot?
