(Disclaimer: I'm not a regular Firefox user)
After downloading ... unzip the zip? To where? Into a Firefox script directory?

Just unzip to a location you are aware of (maybe Documents) and then continue with the install instructions

Oh, open the index file? So it's not a script / plugin, but a webpage?

The index file is just a local webpage.
You need to edit the script.js file in the scripts folder first though (as above).

It works for me, both in Firefox and Chrome. Why do you call it "ForeFirefox"?
Default view (100%) is too large. So I reduced to 50%.
Nice view with a download going on.
A bit sparse with no download going on.

It's a very early alpha that needs more love and attention
For my testing on chrome it shows up as horizontal dividers only, no text.
The purpose of it for me was to have an "at a glance" status of SABnzbd, so I could look at my 2nd monitor and see: okay still downloading
