Suddenly very slow download speed

Post by Timmey »

Hi!
I just encountered a problem with just sabnzbd and don't know what to do anymore :(
Since a few days my downloadspeed is stuck at 8-10 kb/sec. So the usual conclusion "Oh damn my ISP throttled my speed, got to switch the ports." No, that did not work out this time. So I asked a friend to download something if maybe my usenet service provider sucks balls at the moment. He had full speed.
The fun part comes now: If I use Newsleecher with the exact same server properties it works like sabnzbd used to. With full speed.
I tried reinstalling the program with fresh new settings, tried the beta, tinkered with the options. I don't know what to do anymore :/
I am using Windows 7, with no firewall and I'm not using IPv6.

Thanks in advance!

Try a full queue rebuild.
BTW: are you sure the posts are still on the server?

And if the queue rebuild does not solve it:

Download a post that will not removed due to DMCA, for example an Ubuntu image: http://nzbindex.com/search/?q=ubuntu&ag ... m=1&more=1

If that goes well, the problem is in the post you are trying to download.
If that does not go well either, the problem is in your setup.

I did try a full queue rebuild. It somehow worked for about 200mb and then shut down to the 10kb/sec downloadspeed.
Also there is no need to try another download since Newsleecher downloads the same files with full speed.
But thanks anyway. Guess I have to move on to another client :(

Hi, exact same problem here ..
Windows 7 64-bit, sabnzbd 0.7.20 and 0.8.0Beta3, queue rebuild, slow download speed average 8kB/s after aprox. x00MB download.
Newsleecher with same file, full speed.
So neither internet connection nor news provider seem to be responsible.
Even firewall and virus scanner are blamelessly ..
Really don't know what to do.

Slow speeds can also have other causes, like a problem with the Usenet server.
Or hitting a missing post.

problem solved ..
In my case it was caused by deep packet inspection for bandwidth throtteling of my ISP.

I do suspect the same. But why does Newsleecher still work while sabnzbd gets screwed. What is different between those 2 programs if the server settings are the same?

Try using ssl connection to your server and see if the speed stays constant, this will stop your ISP from deep packet inspection.

Correct.

But for throttling News/NNTP connections, an ISP does not need deep packet inspection; looking at the IP destination is enough:

Code: Select all

$ host news.giganews.com
news.giganews.com has address 216.166.105.131
So ... an throttling ISP can safely assume any traffic to 216.166.105.131 is News/NNTP, so the ISP will throttle that. If you use SSL, it still has the same IP address ...

If you want to avoid this, use a VPN

Yes, I know. I am using a SSL connection on both programs, but still sabnzbd downloads with 10 kb/sec while newsleecher goes off with 10 mb/sec with the same server and same .nzb-file.
