Re: how to verify that 256 ssl is really enabled? ?
Using SSL usually requires that you use a different port of your Usenet provider (e.g. 563).
If you can use such a port and have SSL on, it's quite certain that you are using SSL.

But SSL isn't much of an encryption

There are many better ways to encrypt something, 'cause SSL isn't very safe.shypike wrote:Please explain.wyd1 wrote: But SSL isn't much of an encryption

Usenet providers offer unencrypted connections or SSL connections.
So, there's nothing else we can offer.
What's your issue?
If you want something else, please talk to your Usenet provider first.

I know shypike, that wasn't an attack or something like that. I'm just saying that SSL isn't much of an encryption, that's all. I know that the usenet providers offer only SSL encrypted connections.shypike wrote: Usenet providers offer unencrypted connections or SSL connections.

I live in Swizerland, so that isn't much of a problem for me. Downloading isn't ilegal here

Thank's for your answer shypike...
I'm just suprised by high speed... I used windows in the past with newsbin with my old computer and It was more slowly
I have SSL on, I use 563 port... Like you say, configuration should be ok
I wanted verified with a linux tool... it's not possible ?

You can use wireshark or tcpdump to see what's happening on your nic...

I'm not insulted or anything, just confused.wyd1 wrote: I'm just saying that SSL isn't much of an encryption, that's all.
The main reason people use SSL is to avoid traffic shaping by their ISP's.
And to prevent sending their username/password in cleartext.
It may not be "much of an encryption", it's what your Swiss banks use too
Or do they have some super-encryption for HTTPS?
