I have been doing some testing of SSL with the 0.4.0 b5 and have found it to be incredibly slow compared to normal nntp transfer or a stunnel transfer.
In normal / stunnel configuration, I achieve ~700kps (max for my link)
In SSL mode within sab, it never goes above 200kps for more than a few screen updates at a time.

Shortcoming of the Python libraries, we are looking at how to solve this, but it will be difficult.
