Download Failed Out of your Server's Retention

Post by jmckeown5524 »

That's the error message I get in some instances.  Could someone explain to us newbies what must be done to avoid this in the future.  Something else, when I watch the down loading activity I get the distinct feeling that only one of the targets is being downloaded or if you like one at a time.  My ISP allows for 8 connections.  Is there a switch or something that I missed.  With Utorrent or Limewire I often get 5 or 6 targets at the same time and my line speed is say 1,400 bit/s as opposed to 300 with sabnzbd.  Thank you for the time that it takes to read and answer these questions.

Usenet servers have a limited retention time.
This means that they remove content that's older then this.
Usually the more expensive your server is, the longer its retention time is.
Free servers often are limited to a few days,
while premium servers (like Giganews) go upto 700 days.

Retention time is not absolute and some providers even lie about it.
SABnzbd show you (in the queue) how old an NZB is (or rather its content).
Check this against the retention time your provider promises.

BTW: you should have seen a large number of warnings on the "Connections" page.

And just to add, you can select how many connections you use in the "Servers" section.

This depends on your Usenet provider.
Lately there has been a marketing war where they compete about the amount of supported connections.
A good value is something between 8 and 15.
You may have to experiment a bit, as the behavior varies.
There not need to go above 20, which usually will decrease the total speed.

It looks like you managed to get double quotes into the NZB name.
Windows doesn't accept that.
How did you do this?
In other words, how did you get this NZB into SABnzbd?

Well, just got the error AGAIN, and the nzb just got it from nzbindex, and double clicked it when downloaded...
The weird thing is, he downloads all the parts, and when he starts to unpack, all hell breaks loose... And there are no " "  to see in the incomplete folder....

also the weirdest of al this is, i added the same nzb to another nzbdownloader, and he downloads just fine....

edit : checked 4 nzb's, 2 of which failed, and 2 which succeeded, all 4 contain ;quot; before the articles... :S
'

edit 2 : got a temp. fix for this, but it's not something i'm very fond off...
( just let it download and turn repair unpack and delete off )

Can you email one of more of these NZBs to bugs at sabnzbd.org ?
The logging seems to complain about the name of the NZB,
not the content of the NZB.
I would like to know exactly how you get the NZBs into SABnzbd.
Do you download them to disk and let SABnzbd pick them from the watched folder?
Do you use a third-party utility like nzbdStatus (Firefox-addon) to send them directly to SABnzbd?

I use google chrome to download them, and let them automatically open.
Let me send them to you.

Did you let the SABnzbd installer register the NZB extension?

I suspect the problem is in the combination of Chrome and SABnzbd
and not in the NZB itself.
What happens if you download such an NZB to disk
and then enter it manually to SABnzbd?
Or use Firefox or IE for a change?

and not in the NZB itself.
What happens if you download such an NZB to disk
and then enter it manually to SABnzbd?
Or use Firefox or IE for a change?

same thing happens, and a friend of mine, has the EXACT same problem but uses IE and she adds the nzb link into sabnzbd manually

I've had this happen to me. But it only occurs when i try to use an nzb from a particulr poster. I've realised that he posts using JCBinup and also uses it to create the nzb.

Whenever i now want to download a post from him, I ignore his nzb and create my own using Newsleecher and SAB then downloads it ok.

It's just a thought but maybe nzb's created with JCBinup might not be 100% compatable?

The logging clearly shows SABnzbd trying to make nonsense folders.
This is not due to the content of the NZB, but its own file name.
With what I know now, I don't have a clue about what goes wrong.
What I need is a "debug" level logging of what happens when the NZB enters the queue.

Just checking: is this a case of using an NZB to download another NZB?
(SABnzbd will automatically send the downloaded NZB to the queue.)
