Hi and thanks for the great, free prog - its much appreciated.
My problem is that when SABnzbd is downloading my net meter shows it uploading too. When the downloads are paused or finished the uploads stop.
I installed another net meter to check and that showed the same - uploading during downloads, like torrents, but I have no torrents running. So far this month 800 MB has been upped.
I've run full AV scans with Nod32 and run malwarebytes twice a week with no results.
I thought newsgroups were download only
Thanks for any help on this and, oh yeah, I did a forum search but turned up nothing, so it must be me or somebody would have reported it by now...
Regards,
Altercuno

Re: SABnzbd Uploading during Downloads
Alter, I have news for you.
If you run a normal http/ftp download from a website, you will be uploading too.
It's simple rules.
If you need something from a website, you send a request.
Then that request generates a response from the website.
And then, if both sides agree, a session is created to deal with the download, preferably a multi-threaded download.
Then, for each little chunck of data that is sent to you, you send out a response saying "got it. send me more.".
All this is prone to result in a few megs on http/ftp but nntp (newsgroups) might need a few hundred megs instead.
For instance, while I'm downloading at 3200KB/s, I am also uploading at around 320KB/s.
So, if you downloaded 10G, you could have uploaded 800M if I am not screwing up my math
Cheers

That answers it nicely john...many thanks
I thought with newsgroups the nzb was all that was needed,

An NZB consists of Usenet article identifiers (and which ones will assemble to a file).Altercuno wrote: That answers it nicely john...many thanks

Any client needs to send those article identifiers to the provider (like "give me article hdfhhdfh437354hf").
About 80% of the NZB gets sent to the provider this way.
Re: SABnzbd Uploading during Downloads
Ah ok thanks again...
Its just that last month my up was 20Gb and I quit torrents cos of the up.

Re: SABnzbd Uploading during Downloads
Yes, it is SSL the both ways.
And SSL should apply an even bigger overhead than the usual.
If you're using SSL, maybe you should also consider browsing and downloading the NZB's from sites that support HTTPS.
Most of them do support it nowadays.

Errr, where does that quote come from, Shypike.
I believe those words might be mine, but I can't see them on this thread...
Ok, that was my signature (I have signatures removed on the forum).
Nicely updated now.

Re: SABnzbd Uploading during Downloads
Ok good advice thanks...
I tried enabling HTTPS suport in SABnnzbd in Connections->General, but after Save & Restart Firefox opened a window with the warning: This Connection is Untrusted. You have asked Firefox to connect securely to localhost:9090, but we can't confirm that your connection is secure.
So I stopped there and not knowing what to do posted here...

Re: SABnzbd Uploading during Downloads
You have to know how certificates work.
There are companies that certify a given link as being from a given site.
This way you are sure that the site and the certificate company both have the same encrypted key, thus marking the site as good to browse, shop, etc.
Those certificate companies charge their service (which is completely understandable), but nice-humble-free projects like SAB+ can't buy certificates.
Soooo, there is the self-signed procedure.
But the self-signed procedure makes YOU the certifying company.
You certify the link for the 1st time.
You download the certificate to your browser and then it won't bug you again with that message.
Firefox has a download certificate button on the bottom when you open a self-signed https site.
Cheers

Thanks john for explaining more. Having read a bit on HTTPS it seems the way to go and I'll give it a try...

Re: SABnzbd Uploading during Downloads
That's fine as long as you've downloaded around 40GB so far this month. I upload around 200MB for each 10GB downloaded. As has been stated before this is quite normal.Altercuno wrote: I installed another net meter to check and that showed the same - uploading during downloads, like torrents, but I have no torrents running.
