Super Simple SABnzbd+ on any iDevice tutorial.

Post by zipxavier »

Updated for 0.66! Thanks again for the OS X Source!

Not sure what other forum to post this in. I had successfully installed SABnzbd+ on my iPhone 4 through forum and blog reading. I took all the info and made an easy guide on how to install it on any iDevices. This will work on any iPhone, iPod or iPad with working par2 and unrar.

http://sites.google.com/site/sabnzbdiphone

Hope this helps anyone looking to get all setup on their iDevices.

Impressive work.
Do you get any decent performance out of this combination?

On my iPhone 4 it's great, PAR and unrar are speedy. I tried it on an iPhone 3G and while the performance was fairly slow it worked perfectly. I'd recommend a 3GS or higher.

Ahah that's impressive!! Never thought it would be possible!
Maybe we'll have an official sabnzbd app one day? ::)

Also, a quick suggestion: the best media player IMHO is AVplayer. I've tried oplayer, cinexplayer, VLC... And none of them is as good.

And do you actually use it on your iPhone 4 to download content?

Isn't the Apple TV (2nd generation) also an iOS device? If so, I guess you could SAB on the Apple TV (2) too?

I use it to download media that can be played back on the device.

It does also work on the apple TV 2. You can follow the same directions with one change. Instead of using mobileterminal to start San you'd issue the same commands with winscp.

Not possible, the AppStore explicitly forbids apps written in an interpreted language.

Thanks for the tutorial. I just tried this today... I did find a couple issues during the install but nothing major.

I ended up getting the Sabnzbd wizard looping even after completing all five steps. I am wondering if that is due to the version of Sabnzbd. There was some bug reports about this wizard looping on this version awhile back. The sabnzbd.ini file was being created and written to but it seems the newsgroup server info was not being added. So I manually edited it via Terminal app. Killed the python process and started it up again. All good.

I'd be interested if/when you might update to the newer version.  :)

Thanks again.

And SABnzbd is GPL-ed, which is incompatible with the AppStore license; I believe because the AppStore does not allow you to redistribute the software package (with all the DRM built in etc). That's why a VLC contributor had VLC removed from the Apple AppStore: he was protecting VLC against Apple / AppStore's license/rules.

What happened with VLC is rather odd.
I think it was the VLC authors wanting to have Apple play by the GPL rules
instead of condoning it.
Too bad, because now the users are the real losers.

As soon as VLC is available on Android (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-android.html), I'll be glad I've chosen for Android and not iPhone/iOS.

you mention the ability to install on the 2nd gen apple tv. has anyone attempted this? it seems to me that due to the lack of a physical hard drive, the point of doing so would be fruitless. until there's a way to use a usb external hard drive

Hi all,
Are there still people interested in this port ?

because I manage to have it all working (par2,ssl,yenc....) and I have added a springboard icon to start it easily!

I'm using it on an ipad2 with IOS 4.3.3 and it's working like a charm

I've made an installer script but I have to make more tests before releasing.....

If someone wants to test it I can upload my package somewhere and post the link.

Cheers.

I am extremely interested and would love to test it for you. I have an iPhone 3GS, 4 and when the jailbreak comes out a 4S to test it on if you'd like.
