Nothing works - SAB 0.6.8 on PowerMAC 10.4.11

Post by guitarboy »

I've scoured these forums to figure out how to get the SAB .app working on a PowerMac running OS X 10.4.11. The info I've found is for older versions of SAB or older versions of OS X. The app appears in the Applications folder and I was able to add it to the dock.

I've tried all the permutations of the URL:

http://localhost:8080/sabnzbd
http://[MY IP]:8080/sabnzbd
http://127.0.0.1:8080/sabnzbd

And with all of them get the error Safari can’t open the page “http://localhost:8080/sabnzbd” because Safari can’t connect to the server “localhost” (where localhost changes depending on the address I've used).

I found the hosts file and it has the correct entries:

127.0.0.1 localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
::1 localhost

If I point my browser to http://localhost I get the test page for the Apache server, so the address isn't blocked. The firewall is turned off.

There does not appear to be an .ini file with .app. I did locate a crash log, which has the following entry (repeated several times):
Host Name: media13
Date/Time: 2011-08-27 11:28:56.175 -0700
OS Version: 10.4.11 (Build 8S165)
Report Version: 4

Command: SABnzbd
Path: /Applications/SABnzbd.app/Contents/MacOS/SABnzbd
Parent: WindowServer [60]

Version: 0.6.8 (0.0.0)

PID: 245
Thread: Unknown

Link (dyld) error:

Symbol not found: ___stack_chk_guard
Referenced from: /Applications/SABnzbd.app/Contents/MacOS/SABnzbd
Expected in: /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib
I'll try to track down that error, but in the meantime I'm hoping someone on this forum has some suggestions or explanation.

Is SABnzbd running at all? Open a terminal, and type

Code: Select all

ps aux | grep -i sabnzbd
If so, check which port:

Code: Select all

netstat -a -n | grep -i listen
If SAB is not running, find SABnzbd.py (or by which name the SAB application is known on Mac OSX), open a terminal, and run the SABnzbd.py from within the terminal; you will now see all output from SABnzbd. If it stops, post the log here.

Did you download the "Leopard" version?
The standard version won't work on anything older than Leopard.

What a nightmare.

No, it's not running at all. At least I don't get any output from the ps command.

I installed Python 3.2.1 Mac OS X 32-bit i386/PPC Installer (for Mac OS X 10.3 through 10.6) from http://www.python.org/download/ and tried running the script using:

/usr/local/bin/pythonw SABnzbd.py

Returned with the error:

The Python module Cheetah is required

So I installed Cheetah. (At this point I'll note that I'm not a Mac guy and haven't used Unix in a long time, so this was a painful process). Lots of errors during the Cheetah install so I don't know if I did this properly, but the installation did finish with the message Pure Python installation succeeded.

Tried rerunning SABnzbd.py. Result:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "SABnzbd.py", line 43, in <module>
import cherrypy
ImportError: No module named cherrypy
Very frustrating. Has anyone succeeded in getting SAB 0.6.8 to work on a PPC?

Aargh, ok the Leopard version is working. Phew. Thanks for the help.

This Mac terminology is all new to me. But in all fairness, there's nothing about using the leopard version on the standard download page http://sabnzbd.org/download/

Just spend the better part of an hour troubleshooting this. Maybe some text noting that the universal binary getting downloaded by default is only for 10.6+

The next release will show that in the DMG image.
Nobody reads readme's anyway.

I did read the readme (against my scruples) and didn't find anything except for a reference to ISSUES.TXT, which was missing in the DMG. I'm sure it's elsewhere. As you suggest, the DMG filename would be hard to miss.

I'm pretty new to using a Mac (have happily avoided them for years), but I have noticed that there's a general disdain among Mac fanboys for anything pre-Intel. Trying to get a hand-me-down PowerMac up and running is a source of never ending frustration, dealing with hard to find documentation and obsolete printer drivers, Flash player, other media players, etc. etc. I have nowhere near the same level of frustration with a much older XP machine.

I don't have a disdain for pre-Intel macs, I just don't have one.
Also, in SABnzbd's case the divide is between Leopard (and older) and SnowLeopard/Lion.

Sorry, didn't mean to single you out. In general SAB provides great support. I was just venting my frustration after many lost hours of working with this beast.
