SABnzbd+ consistently FREEZES my OS X 10.6.8 system
Hello all,
First let me say, I love SABnzbd+ -- amazing work.
Since moving (i.e. changing Broadband providers) I'm noticing that each time I run SABnzbd+ 0.7.3 on my Mac (OS X 10.6.8) My system FLAT OUT FREEZES -- only to be solved by a HARD reboot. In particular, I'm noticing after I let SAB run for a bit with a moderate to light queue that 3 specific applications are locking up in the activity monitor:
1. Activity Monitor -- not responding
2. Adium (chat app) -- not responding
3. Finder -- not responding
Killing these selectively does NOT work -- I can't launch any commands via terminal -- Chrome then starts complaining about "non responsive web pages" etc.
I've tried deleting my prefs, I've tried re-installing from scratch... considering I moved internet providers, I mad sure I set a speed limit of 5020 KBs (My upload tests around 50mbps) -- I used to run this program and it performed like a woodchipper! Now I'm getting freezes EACH and everytime I use it...
I'm happy to include a snippet from my log file -- however, I'm not sure what the offending log message would look like... I see "not found" errors but that looks to be an issue with assembling a particular file, not SAB overall.
All ideas are greatly appreciated -- I hate submitting the "it used to work, now it's not... and I have no info to share" posts... I am happy to share any info you think might be pertinent!
I'm really hoping it's something silly on my end... probably is -- fresh eyes are always good...
Cheers!

Re: SABnzbd+ consistently FREEZES my OS X 10.6.8 system
If your system freezes completely due to SABnzbd, then I suspect something is wrong with your system.
On a decent OS (and OSX is OK in this area) a mere user-level program does not hang up the OS, even if it is buggy.
Have you looked at SABnzbd with the activity monitor?
BTW: check your article cache in Config->General, make sure you have at least 200M.
How much memory has your system?
I can drive SABnzbd up to 11MBytes/sec (with a linespeed of 100Mbit/sec) on a mid-2010 miniMac
and still get a decent response doing other things.
(The only exception being a serious par2 repair and unrar, when the slow hard disk becomes a bottleneck).

Re: SABnzbd+ consistently FREEZES my OS X 10.6.8 system
Thanks for the quick reply!
Agreed -- it shouldn't be freezing my system at all... especially after working so well for so long!
I've just increased my cache from 200M to 8G (hello!) -- I'm working with 16GB or RAM so I figured I might as well put it to work!
The host computer is a dual-quad mac pro with an ethernet connection to the router (so no wireless in the mix); it's reading/writing to an esata RAID 6 array -- they aren't SSD's but it is *plenty* fast. That said, I've still set it to pause downloads for post-processing.
Any other thoughts/ideas are very much appreciated.
Cheers!

Re: SABnzbd+ consistently FREEZES my OS X 10.6.8 system
More than ample hardware, SABnzbd shouldn't even be able to put a perceptible dent in its performance.
But what does the Activity Monitor tell you?
Does it keep one core 100% loaded, does it actually use a lot of memory?
Does it hang in par2 or unrar?
As an experiment you could limit the download speed a bit.

Re: SABnzbd+ consistently FREEZES my OS X 10.6.8 system
SABnzbd+ barely touches the CPU -- the issue I'm having is from a "hang" that then causes the whole system to hang... similar to when an NFS mount goes stale and all the processes relying on it just halt.
I tried taking Chrome out of the picture in case that was the culprit -- but no change -- still hangs the same when I use firefox instead.
I'm running a `tail -f` on the log so I can at least see if there are any messages should another hang occur.
Thank you for the suggestion to limit the download -- I've dropped it from 5020 kbs to 1000 kbs -- it's slowly moving right along -- I'll let it run for a while and report back to you...
I'll haven't noticed the hang in relation to unrar or PAR2 -- to be honest, when it hangs the whole thing just freezes so it's difficult to tell what the "offending process" was... again, I'm hoping tailing the log will help that.
Thanks again for your help... the more I think about this, the only thing that changed between the working and freezing environments was the connection speed -- Fios is much faster than Time Warner but I figured limiting
my speed to 5020 would keep me within my 50mbs cap. Also, not sure it matters but my Giganews account accepts 50 threads... could the thread count be the issue?
Cheers.

Re: SABnzbd+ consistently FREEZES my OS X 10.6.8 system
In case of an unstable system, run Memtest86. See http://www.memtest.org/#downiso
I hope a Mac can boot from an ISO burned CD. If not: There seems to be one that runs inside the OS (sounds less thoroughly to me, but it's a start): http://osxdaily.com/2011/05/03/memtest-mac-ram-test/

Probably not, but 50 is much higher than needed.jph wrote:could the thread count be the issue?
Giganews maxes out at about 16 connections.
Re: SABnzbd+ consistently FREEZES my OS X 10.6.8 system
After going for a bit limited at 1000k I bumped it up to 3000k and got the lock up again.
Thank you for the memtest ISO suggestion -- mac should boot it no problem, especially since I'm already running rEFIt.
Btw, not sure it matters but I am using SSL.
UPDATE: Just locked up in a session that was consistently limited to 1000k. Not seeing anything immediately obvious in the log or the console. Guessing memtest is a great next step...

Re: SABnzbd+ consistently FREEZES my OS X 10.6.8 system
Just finished running memtest -- passed with 100%
What else can should I start looking at for clues? Previous posts about similar issues seemed to have been addressed with code revisions -- not sure what else to try...
Cheers.

The ISO-CD method? That's the most thorough method.jph wrote:Just finished running memtest -- passed with 100%
Can you give pointers to those posts where a system freeze has been solved with code revisions?jph wrote: What else can should I start looking at for clues? Previous posts about similar issues seemed to have been addressed with code revisions
Re: SABnzbd+ consistently FREEZES my OS X 10.6.8 system
I suggest you try some BitTorrent program and download a few large Linux distros.
At the least it will give you some clues to whether it's your system or our software.
Although I don't think SABnzbd is wrong, it's always possible that it behaves
odd in very specific situations.

Re: SABnzbd+ consistently FREEZES my OS X 10.6.8 system
Great idea. I'll dust off Transmission and we'll see how it goes...
For the record, I'm pretty sure the issue is unique to my system... If anyone can help me figure out how to get SABnzbd+ cranking again, it's you guys... I really appreciate the expert help.

Re: SABnzbd+ consistently FREEZES my OS X 10.6.8 system
After more research I have narrowed it down to Par2. I am running OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8) and using the default version. I'm unclear on a few things with regard to Par2 other than the fact I need to name whatever version I use to "Par2-sl" :
1. Does the latest version of SAB come with multi-core Par2 by default? The forums seem to state it does however, it doesn't appear to be the case in the activity monitor.
2. Is my Par2 issue due to the issues I read that many were having with multi-core Par2?
3. My machine is a powerhouse but this Par2 is behaving *like* it has a huge memory leak -- it freezes my whole box when it runs @100% even though its running on a dual quad core box. I noticed that SAB screams with speed when Par2 files aren't in the mix. Is there a suggested fix?
Thanks to all for replies and ideas... happy to provide any info you need.
EDIT: @ sander -- per your questions:
1. indeed, I did use the ISO-CD method -- no problem.
2. I thought I saw one dealing with ubuntu... can't find it now -- It is quite possible I was seeing things after way too much coffee and googling -- most probably my mistake. Again, thanks for the help!

Re: SABnzbd+ consistently FREEZES my OS X 10.6.8 system
1. Yes it does.
2. I'm not aware of "many complaints". We do get complaints from Windows users about multi-core par2 (which is a different program altogether).
3. It's possible that par2-sl does odd things on your specific system or OS.
How do you determine "it doesn't appear to be the case in the activity monitor" ?
Currently we have an option to disable par2-multicore for Windows.
It may be a good idea to extend this to OSX.

Re: SABnzbd+ consistently FREEZES my OS X 10.6.8 system
Thanks for the update. If you search for "SABnzb+ freeze" you will see a few discussions pop up (dating back to 2009) regarding OS X and Par2 multi-core oddness; some seem to speculate about the state of Par2 vis-a-vis OS X and the latest SAB release -- I knew you would be able to provide the final answer. Bearing in mind that Par2 is not something you guys are responsible for, I really appreciate your insight
Based on another post I saw from a user with a similar issue, I added the -t+ flag to the optional Par2 flags to force it to use multi-core -- I'll keep you posted on this.
In the activity monitor Par2 (with default settings) max's out at 100% and the machine freezes -- were it taking advantage of multi-core, it would be able to rise up to 800% (8 cores at 100%). I commonly see percentages in the high 700s when doing heavy crunching with multicore applications on my machine.
I'll report back how things are working -- so far... so good.
SABnzbd+ really is an amazing application -- thanks again!
EDIT: per the SABnzbd+ Manual (http://wiki.sabnzbd.org/configure-switches#multi-core) the OS X release does *not* come with multi-core Par2 -- this would explain the topping out at 100% -- in addition the "-t+" flag is erroring out -- I'm guessing I need to find an OS X 10.6.8 friendly multi-core version of Par2 and try it with that...
