Fatal Error issue (sabnzbd.ini" is not a valid...)

Post by cheg »

Hi

I tried searching the forum re. this but to no avail. I'm running Win7 64 and IE9 and Sabnzb was working fine yesterday and today I'm getting this when I try to start it up:

"SABnzbd.exe 0.6.9

SABnzbd detected a fatal error:
"C:\Users\***USER***\AppData\Local\sabnzbd\sabnzbd.ini" is not a valid configuration file
Error message: Invalid line at line "1".

Specify a correct file or delete this file.

Program did not start!"

Any idea what might be causing this? I downloaded the lates version thinking a re-install would work but it didn't. The only thing might have cause this is running a scan with Advanced System Optimizer last night but I've done that many times before without any issues...

Regards

Alex

Easy: rename C:\Users\***USER***\AppData\Local\sabnzbd\sabnzbd.ini to some other name, and start SABnzbd: it will start the wizard, which you should fill out. After that it should work again.

I would be interested to know what **USER** is here.
SABnzbd should handle this gracefully.
Can you perhaps PM the detailed message?

Bringing up an older post, but I have had this same problem twice now. Had to uninstall then reinstall to get it up working again. I tried changing the name of the config file this time, then starting up sabnzbd again, but encounter the same error. Also, the .ini file is blank. It seems I can select some invisible txt, but when i past it to MS word and change the font color nothing shows up there either.
Windows 7 just did a update and restart last night, which in when i found the error.
Thanks in advance

Blunt restarts are always a problem, not only for SABnzbd.
We've done our best to recover from problems, but we cannot prevent all calamities.

ok. no problem. was just wondering if there was a way to recover from that within the .ini file or if there was something i could do to prevent it. Would saving a copy of the .ini file in another location, then if I do get the same error, just copy it back in place of the original work?
Guess I will try it, and if it does happen again Ill update here with results.
Thanks again.

You can also create a copy of sabnzbd.ini in the same directory with a different extension. For example, my .sabnzbd directory contains:

Code: Select all

sabnzbd.ini
sabnzbd.ini-2012-04-14-21:19
sabnzbd.ini.OK-met-news4today
PS: never, ever edit or open sabnzbd.ini with MS Word or Wordpad. Only Notepad.

having probs with Sabnzbd. it was working fine until 2 days ago. now I get the following:
++++++++++++++++++++++
SABnzbd.exe 0.7.7

SABnzbd detected a fatal error:
Cannot access the user profile.

Please start with sabnzbd.ini file in another location

Program did not start!

++++++++++++++++++++++

following various posts - i tried the following:

a] moved the sabnzbd.ini file into the same folder as sabnzbd [ in program files ].
b] changed the desktop link to "run in admin" as follows - "C:\Program Files (x86)\SABnzbd\SABnzbd.exe" -f sabnzbd.ini
this initiated [ on first run ] the wizard and opened the UI. subsequent clicks on the desktop icon work OK and also open the browser UI.
c] during install I checked the associate .NZB with the program .

d] downloaded a couple of NZB's from binsearch. when I click on one - instead of either launching sabnzbd - or - adding the NZB to the queue, I get the message as indicated:

SABnzbd detected a fatal error:
Cannot access the user profile.

Please start with sabnzbd.ini file in another location
Program did not start!

e] i installed sabnzbd using an Admin User and also ran the windows EXE install in Admin mode.
f] using Windows 7 premium.

in summary - i am able to launch sabnzbd and see the UI in the browser - BUT - i cannot click on downloaded NZBs to add them to the queue.

there must be a simple solution, but I just cannot figure it out.

HELP !!!!

You're not seeing SABnzbd's UI, but it's panic message.
Something went wrong during installation.

Open a command prompt: WindowsKey-R, type cmd and press Enter.
Then type (literally):
"c:\Program Files (x86)\SABnzbd\SABnzbd-console.exe"
Enter
Then see what happens.

Hi shypike,

tnx for the quick response.

tried it and I get the following msg in the command prompt -

"Fatal Error:
cannot access the user profile.
pleas start with sabnzbd.ini file in another location"

i am running under the same user where i installed - which user has admin privileges [ it is actually the only user... ]
initially - when I installed - a folder was created in Local/appdata called sabnzbd with the .ini file in it. that did not work - so following some posts, I moved it into the program files(x86) folder - which does not work either.

as mentioned before - if i click on the desktop icon [ modified as in my previous post ] i do get the UI with an empty queue - ready for action. i just cannot associate downloaded .NZB files - for some reason they try to relaunch sabnzbd.

in the UI config i see that the sabnzbd host+port is configured as localhost:8080.

much appreciated

EDIT :
just tried in the command prompt "sabnzbd-console.exe -f sabnzbd.ini" and that does launch the UI.

still trying to figure this out....

This means that SABnzbd cannot get usable user profile information from the Windows registry.
Do you have "odd" characters in your user name?
What do you see when you open a command prompt and type:
set userprofile

Using the -f parameter will solve the issue.
It's also possible to add a full path after the -f so that you can place your admin area where you want it.

no odd characters in the user name.

not sure about your comment on the "-f' parameter. should I use with the set userprofile command ?? in the program files (x86)\sabnzbd folder ?

EDIT :

with "set userprofile" I get :

C:\users\xxxxxxx [ xxxxxx = my user name which is 11 characters long - no odd chars

Just pick a folder, like c:\users\xxxxxxxxxxx\usenet
SABnzbd will put all its files there, you can still change individual folders in Config->Folders.
You do have to start SABnzbd every time with the same -f parameter.
You can change the desktop shortcut for that.

well - no go unfortunately.
uninstalled and re-installed sabnzbd into a folder as you suggested - c:\users\xxxxxxxxxxx\sabnzbd.
also associated the .NZB with the install.

on initial desktop click - no go. added the sabnzbd.ini file [ created it with notepad and saved it into the same folder as the program ].
modified the desktop shortcut with "-f sabnzbd.ini" and it launched the wizard.

completed successfully and launched the UI.

clicking on a downloaded .NZB file still gets the same error -
+++++++++++++++++++++++++

SABnzbd detected a fatal error:
Cannot access the user profile.

Please start with sabnzbd.ini file in another location
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

very frustrating - I had sabnzbd working for more than 2 years...

any other ideas ?????

really appreciate the help here.
