binsearch.info

Post by terrywc »

I do not have a problem concerning Sabnzbd, but I would like to learn a few things. I have been using Sabnzbd for awhile, although I do not pretend to know in detail how it all works. Recently I have gone to binsearch.info in search of some items, and created a NZB file there, which Sabznbd picked up and loaded for me. Could someone please explain, in layman's language, how Sabnzbd does this, as I did not make any changes to Sabnzbd directing it to binsearch.info. Thanks so much. Clinton

Apparently you have setup a "watched folder" in Config->Folders and saved the NZB to that folder.

Yes. That is correct. I am just trying to understand the mechanics here. (1) I have a watch folder. (2) In Binsearch.info, I check mark an entry and then click on create NZB. (3) Binsearch creates a .exe file. . . . This is a nzb.exe file ... Somehow it gets to the drop folder on my computer, even though its last extension is not nzb. What happens then...is Sabnzbd contantly watching the watch folder for any nzb file to appear and then goes to work on it, even though it is an exe, which I assume is a self-executing file. Anyway when it sees that file, it goes to to work on it. Is that sort of how it works. Sorry to be a little slow on this...but have not really thought much about these mechanics until I saw that .exe file.... Clinton

SABnzbd does NOT process EXE files and neither does binsearch.info produce EXE files.
My guess is that a) you're using Windows b) your Windows Explorer doesn't show "known file extensions"
and c) you searched for something ending in "exe".
binsearch.info produces a file called something.exe.nzb and Windows Explorer shows you something.exe

BTW: be careful with software coming from Usenet, it's often infected with all sorts of viruses and trojans.

Thanks for the response. I guess you have figured out that I am learning as I go along. Here is what I know about this process. In binsearch, I select an item and then click on create NZB. In this case it is a phone app I want to check out. Binsearch sends it to my watch box as a XXXX.nzb. Sabnzbd picks it up processes into into an .exe. When I then double click on the exe file (in windows), it does not load and yes, I am aware that .exe files can contain nasty things. So I think I have an answer to the original question about how it works....and it seems to be doing its job. I just tried a couple more phone apps that I am not interested in, and they all produced .exe files. Just to get a sense of things, I also tried a movie, and it processed just fine as an .avi file. So not sure why I am getting .exe for phone apps, which should come up as .apk files, not exe. Thanks so much for your help. Clinton

The exe could be self-extracting zip or rar archives.
You can check with either WinZip or UnRar.

I'd stay away from anything that's not supposed to be an .exe file, but is (as is the case for phone apps). Double clicking an .exe file and nothing happening is a classic sign that you got one of those "nasty things"...
