[DOWNLOAD] speed issues [NAS]

Hi all,
I'm using sabnzbd (0.7.11) on my syno 1511+
python is installed (2.7.3 (default, Mar 7 2013, 20:36:28) [GCC 4.2.0])
i use it for about 3 months
so far i was very happy with my download speed, i'm on a cable provider with 100mbps connection.
it works very good on a 5.0 MBPS basis.
program is great but sometimes not as user friendly as a client working on my PC (newsleecher, which i used for the last 9 years or so)
so today i want to grab a file from my computer and i discover that dowload speed is around 11.5 MBPS...
i tried several files (the same) on both sabnzbd and newsleecher and speeds are really different, for the same fil time is divided by two (timer in hand to be sure it was not a "display" issue)
PC and NAS are connected to the same switch working in gigabit and with the same type of cable (tried to invert but result is the same)
search on the web and found some articles about connection limit (server paramaters are the same on both clients), cache as been set to 500M (tried 128M, 200M also), reboot haven't change anything
do you have any idea of what can slow sab this much ?
is it because it's on a NAS ? (but i have no issues on speed between media player and NAS even on Blu ray image through the same switch BTW)
thanks

SABnzbd is slower than most other programs (but it does do a lot more).
You won't notice the difference on most modern desktops and laptops.
NAS systems with their paltry CPUs and low memory, will show a difference.
But very few Usenet clients are available for NAS systems anyway.
BTW: for media players, the video GPU usually does the heavy lifting.

To analyze things, you could run SABnzbd on your PC and see what the speed is. That will make clear the impact of the CPU
FWIW: With SABnzbd, I can achieve more than 200 Mbps on a Core i3.

thanks for the answer
I understand how CPU can impact post processing but how it can impact internet speed...
i can test on my PC, it's also a core i3
i'll try and let you know
for my media connection i was talking about the transfer speed between nas and media player which is around 60MBPS (so it can handle more than 5/6)

you are right
it works perfectly on my pc, with 11.5 MBPS instead of 5.5 MBPS on my nas, tried both with the same file and results are clear.
it's quite suprising though i didn't think that a cpu could change that much a download speed...
I will think of a new solution to install the system on a PC instead of my NAS

Your Synology 1511+ has an Atom D525 CPU (see
http://forum.synology.com/wiki/index.ph ... y_NAS_have ), so that's not a very impressive CPU.
If you look at
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php , you can look up the differences (in magnitude!) of the Atom and the i3 benchmarks.
Before you move your download from the NAS to your PC ask yourself if you really need fast downloads all the time. Maybe your NAS speed is enough?

2 things bother me with the nas :
speed (but not always need it - so part can be managed by nas)
and for big files if repairs is needed or if there is a missing file, it's more difficult than with my pc.
i think i will mix up both

nas will stay as primary but some will be worked using my pc.
thanks for the infos

I can see where the CPU would be affecting your download speed if it cannot process fast enough to keep up with the download speeds, but my i5 shouldn't be experiencing these same issues. I would like to see SAB utilizing my full bandwidth when I am not at home or even when I am home and I am simply not using my internet. The strange thing is, my problem as described in the following thread:
http://forums.sabnzbd.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=14042 (I hope this is not considered quoting my post to get a faster answer, if it is I apologize.) affects my entire network. Even though SAB is only using a small percentage of my bandwidth (between 700 and 800 kbps on a 6 Mbps connection), I am unable to perform any other network traffic if it goes out to the internet. My browsers will time out as if there is no internet connect, but my SAB is still running at only 700 to 800 kbps. Any thoughts?

700 to 800 kbps, or 700 to 800 kBps?
So: what is SAB exactly saying?

KBps, yes, I'm sorry about that mistake, like I said in the other thread that adds up to about 5 to 6 Mbps, so we can disregard my question. Sorry for the mistake. Please forgive my hijacking of the other thread, I can delete my posts there if you want me to.
