Astraweb, according to their Policy wants to keep your personal information on file indefinitely;

Ok not a problem, just sign up with fake information, but regardless, some unsuspecting person(s) might not do this and realize the consequences.

Retaining data forever, there's no telling what could happen to it years down the road...

Anyhow I just wanted to share this as I believe this is not a good thing to do and I feel no one should support a company that does this type of thing...

They claim this is for abuse, well, I'm not sure how retaining personal data is going to help a company protect itself against, abuse, I think it's complete BULL!

That's the least of concern, although still one no doubt. Apparently there has been a huge uproar on r/usenet about Astraweb storing passwords in plaintext, no hashing, no salting, no encryption, NOTHING!

Sad that a once great Usenet Provider has steadily gone downhill in the past 2 years. Between shady privacy policies, piss poor security, and automatic no human intervention needed DMCA take downs. They no longer stand for anything and there cheaper prices are no longer justified.

Yes no plaintext, no hashing, no salting, no encryption, that's certainly not good....

BUT when a company starts acting like a big FInancial Institute, or a form of Government that has to store your data like this, then that is not good, I don't see that they have any legal right to do so...

Is there any evidence to what you are saying and if so, then this might be considered a breach on their part, therefore your not accountable to their Policy and they can't hold you to it...
