ipv6 downloads via Sabnzbd

Post by drhhitman »

Let me start off by saying that SAB is a fantastic program and probably the most important piece of software i run on my computer.

I have a quick question.
I am running the ipv6.ewaka news server via sabnzbd and was wondering if it is normal to have traffic through the svchost.exe instead of sab itself.  I am not any ipv6 client nor do i have a tunnel broker.  I am simply connecting via the vista toredo tunnel and everything works fine.

I run netlimiter to shape bandwidth and traffic on my pc and it has come to my attention that as i said earlier that sab traffic is not through svchost instead of the sab client.

I run sabnzbd-console set up as a service within vista.  For ipv4 traffic netlimiter shows that data comes down via sab, but for ipv6 it goes through the svchost.

Just wondering if anyone could shed some light on the subject.

I don't use Windows, so I can't check for you. Let's find out whether it's a SABnzbd thing or a general Windows Vista IPv6 thing: surf to

Code: Select all

http://[2001:6a8:a40::21]/pub/mirror/ubuntu.com/releases/8.10/
(which is the litteral ipv6 address for http:// ftp.belnet.be /pub/mirror/ubuntu.com/releases/8.10/, which does not resolve to IPv6 on Teredo) and start downloading the first ISO "PC (Intel x86) desktop CD". During the download, check netlimiter again: what does it show?

BTW: can't it be a netlimiter limitation? Maybe netlimiter doesn't understand teredo/IPv6?

So it's safe to conclude that netlimiter reports that (all) (teredo?) IPv6 traffic goes through svchost.exe instead of the app itself. If so, that makes it a netlimiter or windows vista thing, and not SABnzbd related.

See netlimiter and ipv6 here: https://www.sixxs.net/forum/?msg=setup-79128 , where ipv6 guru Jeroen Massar says:

Then they fixed Norton apparently as it was one of the programs that was causing problems, good to hear.

Does the netlimiter application understand IPv6 then ?

No, it does not, and I'm afraid that is the problem. Netlimiter has to do "something" with the winsock, to be able to limit the speed of every application, so I guess that there is the problem. (But it is strange that trying to get an ipv6 www page by telnet is possible, while netlimiter is installed).
I must say that that was in 2004. I don't know about netlimiter now; I use Ubuntu Linux, not Windows.

Either way, i don't believe netlimiter is preventing any data to be downloaded, and i am able to limit the bandwidth of "svchost.exe" if i need to browse the internet while downloading.  Thanks for all your help and information, it has helped shed some light on the situation.
