sabnzbd 4.1 on syno nas - more system resources then old versions?

Post by supermood »

hi all, maybe a stupid question but I'm really not so a techi.

I was very happy to get my sabnzbd (v 3.0 if I remember correctly) running in a docker on my synology nas (ds918+ Celeron) with a step by step guide for complete dummies. I was not able to change anything for let's say 3 years or maybe 5 no idea. even with my 3 studies I'm somwhow stupid about networks, programming, Linux... ;)
updates of the container were also not working - but it was OK for me. never had any problem.

last week I was able to update the image on 4.1 manually. besides showing the remaining time while unpacking, I was only realizing one major change - unfortunately a bad one.

while downloading or enpacking the nas is basically not responding anymore, just opening the file browser or connect via xxx or refreshing the sabnzbd page needs at least 3 seconds (instead of 0.1 seconds), sometimes 5 or 10.

so I read a lot and realized that there is now an direct syno community app (many thanks for that!!) and I can finally get rid of the complicated docker image and also it should increase performance.

not for me. nas lags are still exactly the same :(

so my question, does anybody have an idea which feature (must be hidden) were added or changed any maybe I can deactivate? or something else I could do?

my first guess would be - if possible - to unpack only one file not serval in a batch but cannot find the setting.
stopping downloads while enpacking doesn't change a thing. I'm running on slower isp as 3 months ago, 50mbit instead of 100. connections are 30 or 50, no change at all. no nas update, no other apps at all are running on the nas - I'm out of ideas.

any idea is much appreciated!!

another thing that is not working anymore (at least on my side) is adding some nzbs via nzb360 let's say 10 in 10 seconds I have 3 in sabnzbd. I have to be very slow, 5 seconds between them.

Reduce your connections to 8 per server, it's more than enough for your needs.
Try disabling Direct Unpack in Config Switches.
Last resort you could enable Pause during Post Processing in Switches.
It's all a bit strange though, as 50mbit is not much at all. My ancient ancient NAS can handle that.
What does the Synology interface show in terms of used cpu and ram?
And just to be sure, what is article cachr set to on the General page of the Config? At least 50% of the memory your device has?

thanks!! yes very strange think so too. I had the exact same settings with the old version for years.

BUT SORRY, MISTAKE I had a 1gig isp earlier, not 100, and now have 500mbit because Fibre isn't available here I'm stuck with cable for the next months until Fibre is mplemented in the house. but anyway I'm slower than with the old sabnzbd version.

will try 8 connections! have tried 30 earlier but not below

direct unpack was disabled, no change. Will do it again with the 8 connections

pause in post was enabled, no change. Will do it again with the 8 connections

just saw in the special section (I would never touch without a specific instruction ;) that ip6 servers are switched on in standard, and for some weeks now I don't have that enabled with my amplifi alien router / mesh (while with the cable isp)
can that be reason? maybe searching for v6 addresses all the time or so?

Have you tried everything with a fresh config? Where you only setup 1 server (with maybe around 20 connections) and try the test 10GB download from the Status and Interface settings window? And don't change any other settings.

yes. 100% fresh install / config with the 4.1.. I a weeks ago I didnt know that there's an app from the community :)

I have not changed any standard setting besides the connections to 50. Will change back to 8 or 20 I'm home in 4 hours and will report. problem was never the download speed and packing seems also fast enough.

it's only that the whole nas is really busy and not responding while sabnzbd is doing something.

maybe the reason is this crappy 500mbit isp via cable here. speed constantly jumping between 0 and max

In SABnzbd: upper right corner Wrench symbol -> Status: what do you see at "System load ".

Mine says: "System load 1.29 | 1.29 | 1.27 | V=2347M R=110M" ... around "1" which is OK. Higher numbers are bad. Lower number better.

On another computer (i3 laptop), SABnzbd says "System load 0.46 | 0.56 | 0.78 | V=2357M R=83M" ... lower numbers so less system load.

never saw that before. thanks! here 3 copies within 15 seconds or so...

2.69 | 0.99 | 0.59 | V=3386M R=439M
5.01 | 1.69 | 0.84 | V=3386M R=752M
6.15 | 2.16 | 1.01 | V=3386M R=815M

seems raising?

and system performance zero?

That's quite high. So check out in synology system monitor (?)
To be sure: check that value while SABnzbd is not doing anything.

"and system performance zero?": press Refresh arrow-circle next to that. Run it while SAB is not doing anything

"Downloadgeschwindigkeit begrenzt durch Festplattengeschwindigkeit (5593x)" .... Slow disks? again: press Refesh arrow-circle while SAB is not doing anything to get your disk speed.

EDIT: Synology tools to see which processes are junk your CPU:

The disk is the problem. Sabnzbd has gotten more aggressive using disk IO in the last versions to get higher speeds, if your disks can keep up.
Are you sure the disks are fine? Are the regular spinning hdd or ssd?
You should consider adding an ssd to have your Incomplete folder on so it can unpack to your spinning disk.
