I'm getting frequent and seemingly random crashed alot on sabnzbd recently. During 4.0 I used to be able to limit these crashes by setting my speed limits to a lower number but with 0.5.0 that seems like a no longer viable fix. This happens most often with larger files.

Please can you define what you mean by it crashes? Does an error appear? does the application become unresponsive?

Do you have SSL enabled on one of your servers? (config>server)

Windiows pops up Sabnzbd has encountered a problem and needs to close, etc etc etc.

I am using SSL, I will give non SSL a go.

Edit: I have tried both SSL and non SSL, both resualt in the same problems

Have a look at the Windows Logs:

1. Click the start button.
2. Select run.
3. Type in eventvwr and hit ok.

That should open the Event Viewer where you can check for errors related to sabnzbd.

Such crashes happen for two reasons only:
A problem in the OpenSSL libraries.
A problem in the runtime library of Python.
Both are largely outside our control.
We are however interesting in Windows event logger details.
The OpenSSL libraries are certainly suspected.

I'm guessing that RC8 is an internal testing version because I don't see it available to download on the site!

Yes, internal testing build specifically targeted at issues like this one. You'll see 0.5.0 final any time now.

I second that.. RC8 runs like a charm. No crashes for the times I've used sabnzbd in the past two days.
