Can't connect to sabnzbd over wifi/remotely

Post by eoren1 »

I've been using Sabnzbd for some time and love it.  I had never tried to connect to it from another computer (either in the house or out) but now have the mynzb iphone app and have failed repeatedly in all attempts to connect.

Setup:
I have sabnzbed running on a Windows XP HTPC connected via ethernet
Sabnzbd is accessed by the ip 192.168.1.5
Comodo firewall/antivirus

I can ping 192.168.1.5 from a mac laptop in the house (over wifi)
I cannot connect to sabnzbd via that laptop's firefox or mynzb off the iphone
Have tried ports 8080, 8085, 6969
Added each port in port forwarding under my Verizon Fios router admin options
Disabled the username/password options in sabnzbd
Disabled the 'require api key'
Disabled Comodo

I'm at a loss as to how to connect to the sabnzbd server over wifi.  Once I can do this, would love to be able to access the computer remotely as well.

Help is greatly appreciated!

The three "disables" you did are not needed (and are dangerous).
Have you tried to access SABnzbd through you're iPhone browser?
Through which address are you using on the iPhone to access SABnzbd?
Do you use the cell phone network or WiFi on your iPhone?
I ask this because you say you setup port-forwarding on your router,
this is only required if you would use the cell phone network.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I did the 'disables' on a very temporary basis just to make sure there was not a config or firewall reason for my being unable to connect.
I had previously tried to connect with the mynzb program with both the user/password and api fields completed but was unable to connect.
The message I get is a timed out error

On the mac and iphone, I typed in http://192.168.1.5:8080/sabnzbd/
Also tried with 8085 and 6969 thinking that my router might have blocked some of the ports - though I don't believe it blocks any ports internally.
On the iphone, I only tried with wifi

I setup port forwarding believing (incorrectly) that this would open the port if it had been blocked by the router

Port-forwarding is used when you want to give access to systems
outside your house, so on the internet.
When your iPhone uses the cell tower, it's on the internet.
When it uses WiFi (yours and not your neigbours) it's within your local network.
With Wifi it should be able to use a local IP like 192.168.1.x
Do you have a second system to check whether SABnzbd on your Mac
is actually accessible for other systems?
Does your router consider the wired and the wireless systems to be
on the same internal network? Are they allowed to communicate?
Can you ping the Mac from your iPhone?

Still no go...
Found this thread which was similar to mine: http://forums.sabnzbd.org/index.php?topic=4901.0

Followed their instructions by changing sab's ip to 0.0.0.0 and port 8080
Put in a username/password
Made sure 'use api' was enabled

Restarted the computer
I also connected the PC directly to the Fios router (it previously was connected to the Airport Extreme which was extending my network)

Tried to connect via a laptop on the same wifi network.
Can ping the internal and external ip address of the PC running sabnzbd
Cannot connect (time out error) when trying 192.168.1.5:8080 or external ip:8080
I have the fios router set to forward ports 8080 and 9090 to the PC at 192.168.1.5

Any other suggestions on how to connect to this PC/sabnzbd??
Thanks again,
E

Update:  I tried to run sabnzbd on my macbook.  Changed the port forwarding rules to be for 192.168.1.7 and then tried to access it using the internal and external ip addresses and :8080 on the iPhone (connected to the wifi network).  Got timeout errors again.  Could not connect to the macbook's sabnzbd via the PC either.
Went to a website that can scan your ports and saw that it was able to ping 8080 on my external ip address.

OK, so the problem isn't in the iPhone.
Something is preventing outside traffic from reaching SABnzbd.
Using the system's IP address (like 192.168.1.5) or 0.0.0.0 will make SABnzbd
listen to outside traffic, if the OS and firewalls allow that.

Having two routers in your house does complicate things, because
you might have two sub-nets.
This make no differencer SABnzbd itself, but it might make firewall setup
more complicated.
Again double check your firewalls.

WoooHoooo!
It WAS the firewall in the end...

I had tried a while ago to disable the firewall and connect but this was before changing sab to 0.0.0.0 and making other adjustments.
I made sure to add sab as a trusted app in the firewall and can now connect via the macbook and iphone to it.

Thanks!!!
