Sabnzbd web interface 'stealth' mode?

Post by spanky85 »

Hi,

I've got my server exposed to the 'net but haven't yet forwarded the port for sabnzbd, since it gives away what it is and tells the whole world that I'm a filthy newsgroup user! Is there a way to get it to just ask for a password in some generic fashion without saying what it's for?

I'm using sabnzbd in Ubuntu Linux, whichever version is the latest in the Lucid repositories.

Thanks!

Personally I would never expose SABnzbd to internet directly.
Have you considered an ssh-tunneling alternative?
Should not be difficult to setup with Ubuntu.

I'll see if we can easily add (another) option to mask the identity of the program.
But you know what they say about security by obscurity...
Picking a non-obvious port number should to the trick just as well.
Scanners usually pick the "known" port numbers like 80 and 443.

This is now in 0.5.5 RC1.
In the sabnzbd.ini you can now change the option login_realm to your own text.

Brilliant, thanks! I've tried ssh tunneling but I seem to lack the skill to outwit the network engineers at my workplace, which I suppose is a good thing!

Try running http://www.bitvise.com/winsshd on your computer/server and use tunnelier on a flashdrive at work. The only stipulation to the server piece is try a common HTTP port like 443. My workplace is crazy with ports as well, but they have to keep that one open :-)!  Works like a champ!
