network share slows down network

Post by ursli »

Version: 0.5.6
OS: Windows 7
Install-type: Windows Installer
Firewall Software: Kaspersky Internet Security
Are you using IPV6?: yes
Is the issue reproducible? yes

On to the detailed problem report: Every time I set my smb network share as download folder the network speed to my NAS slows down to snail pace (about 200kb/s if I try and copy a file, usually I get around 5mb/s) as soon as I close sabnzb or change my download path to something local speed returns back to normal. This has nothing to do with internet download speed, that works fine but when sabnzbd tries to unpack something from my temp dir to my download folder it is taking ages, any other operations I'm trying to do via my smb share while sabnzbd is running are really slow too. Any ideas why this could be happening? I never noticed this behaviour with any other software I'm using, so it seems to be something related to sabnzbd.

Download folder: \\192.168.22.4\nzb
Temp folder: L:\temp

edit: After some more testing I managed to get around the problem by mapping a network drive (which is essentially the same it just maps my network share to a drive letter), no speed problems any more. I still would like to know what could cause this since what I do right now is more of a workaround then a solution.

Do you have the temporary download folder set to an UNC path (\\server\...)?
This should not work at all.
You must use a drive letter for this folder.
The reason is that the par2 tool does not support UNC paths.
In general, do not use external drives for temporary storage, it's always much slower.

No, temp folder is on my local machine, only the finished downloads get moved to my NAS storage via the network.

In that case I have no idea.
SABnzbd doesn't do anything special.
In fact most of the work is done by the unrar program.
Maybe you can try WinRAR (from the author of unrar)
and see how that performs on your NAS.
It's commercial software but you are allowed to evaluate it for a month for free.
