The above speeds are the speeds I'm getting from downloading from Newshosting.com
Can anyone please tell me if this is fast or slow?
I'm on a 14 day trial so no sure if this good or not?
TIA

If you doubt SABnzbd's contribution this, try an alternative like Grabit first.
If you have a mainstream computer off less than 3 years old,
you should be able to get a higher speed (provided your modem, ISP, Usenet provider aren't bottlenecks).
I assume you're using a wired network connection and not WiFi?
WiFi is very bad at giving sustained high bandwidth.
BTW: SABnzbd shows its speed in KBytes/sec while your ISP uses Kbits/sec.
The difference is a factor of 10.

My laptop is about 5 yrs old but always hard wired, I usually get about 2Mb with my ISP.
Might try a different Usenet server provider, see if there's any difference.
I always thought the idea of a Usenet provider was faster dowoads. Are they only as fast as your ISP then
And would a gigabit switch make a difference at all?
Again thnks.

So are you talking about 300 Kbits/sec or 300 Kbytes/sec ?
What does SABnzbd show?
With a 2Mbit/sec ISP, you're switch won't have much influence.

SABnzbd is showing 300Kb/s in the download speed box, what ever that's is?
Sorry about the noobness.

300KB/sec equals about 3000Kbits/sec, so about 3Mbits/sec.
The confusion is not uncommon.
The problem is that an ISP thinks in bits/sec, which is the natural way to think about bandwidth for them.
SABnzbd counts the characters that come in (bytes).
Yes, we could convert it to bits/sec, but people count what they download in bytes.
So you have a 640Mbyte Ubuntu ISO download and not a 6400Mbits one.

Well, first of all, the numbers match: (5 * 1 000) / (4 * 60 * 60) = 0.34 MB/s
Your newsgroup dowload is limited by your Internet (DSL/Cable) connection and your Newsgroup download speed. You can test your Internet connection
http://speedtest.net/ : click on "Begin Test". If that reports something like 2 or 3 Mbps, your Internet connections is the bottleneck. If you want to go faster, get a faster Internet connection at your ISP.

Ok thanks.
Yeah I've only been getting 1-2 Mb off my ISP lately ( Sky ) sometimes don't even get half a Meg, think I need to ring them and see what's going on, supposed to be getting up to 20 meg unlimited , I know thats unlikely and dependant on a lot of things. But I do expect 3 Mb at the very least!
Thanks again.

Indeed something very wrong. You should be getting close to that 20mbps 24/7.
3mbps is not close. 15mbps and higher is close and should be expected 24/7.
If not then you have major problems or the ISP has major problems. Or both.

It dependent on distance from exchange, my sky line was up to 20 mb I received about 4, it's not unusual.
Thank god for fttc 40Mb now :-)

Are you on FttC? Me too! Thanks to FttC, my DSL-connection jumped from ADSL's 10 Mbps (over 4+ km cupper) to VDSL's 62 Mbps (over 0,4 km cupper), which is capped by my 'plan' to 42 Mbps. Which is great.
Do you know how your FttC (in the UK, right?) is deployed? Here in the Netherlands, KPN lays fiber to remote street cabinets, puts a DSLAM in them, and provides VDSL from there to the households. KPN especially selects the street cabinets that 1) are remote and thus offer low ADSL-speed
and 2) have access to a lot of households (500+).

Its deployed the same fibre to street cabinet mini dslam then copper vdsl to premises

OK, thanks. I find VDSL/FttC a great technology; these are the results from the DSL diagnostics of my modem:
current rate upstream: 4104 kbps
current rate downstream: 42016 kbps
attainable rate upstream: 14511 kbps
attainable rate downstream: 61357 kbps
So: my VDSL-line will now give me throughput of 42/2 Mbps (the max service my ISP offers), whereas the line can handle 61/14 Mbps. Not bad for a cupper line.

The geniuses at bt won't show the stats on router but I know I am on the limit of range for 40Mb around 800 yards.
10Mb upload is nice mind, the wife loves it for Facebook pictures :-)
