Sabnxbd pauses for long periods while decoding but has low CPU usage

Post by simoncm »

Hi, I'm using Sabnzbd 0.5.3 on a Synology 410j NAS box.

During operation, I occasionally get long pauses in which the program refuses to respond to the web interface, nothing is downloaded, and in which the log does not get updated. The pauses can last up to 90 mins. The CPU usage during this time varies between 10 and 20% (so not high), memory usage is fairly stable at 30%, and other functions of the NAS are perfectly responsive.

At the end of the period, the program just resumes as normal (web interface responsive, log updating regularly, downloading as normal).

The main culprit from the log is "decoding" e.g. "2010-08-05 15:51:29,976::INFO::[assembler:117] Decoding /volume1/video/SABnzbd/download/XXX.part227.rar yenc".
Although "Finishing import on ...." and "Thread 1@news....." can also lead to long delays. These delays are not universal, e.g. "decoding" operations on different rar part nos take less than a second.

I have tried checking, un-checking "Pause downloading during post-processing", it makes no difference (still totally unresponsive) during the pauses. I have tried different skins (although even if I'm not logged in, the network activity still drops, and then when I try the web interface is non-responsive. I've tried re-loading the sabnzbd package.

Bottom line, I'm stumped  ??? could this be a semi-infinite loop the program gets itself into? if it is, why is it not roasting my CPU?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

The honest answer is "we don't know".
We test on a limited number of platforms and Synology isn't among them.
I don't recognize this behaviour.
Obviiosly it may be a problem in SABnzbd, but it doesn't show itself on
other platforms.
Also there are many factors involved, like the quality of the Python port for Synology.
BTW: memory is usually a problem on NAS devices.
You should have at least 256 MB, 512 is even better.
